Genesis not working
« on: March 10, 2010, 05:07:14 PM »
I just bought a model 1 genesis, (the one that says high definition graphics on it) and all I get when I put a cartridge in is a black screen and a humming sound. I have a cd system attached and when trying to load a cd it does nothing, the cd unit will not turn on. I know the cd system works and it is not just a dirty cartridge problem because I tried several clean games including one I got sealed new and only used a few times, and the cd unit won't turn on. I've tried RF and av through a 32x, and tried it with and without the 32x and cd. I took the system apart and found some corrosion which I cleaned off with a very small wire brush and then with alcohol and I cleaned the cartridge slot. does anyone know what could be causing this? thanks.

ok, I was able to get some funny colors when I hooked it up to both the cd and 32x again and it was making the humming sound directly from the system and through the speakers where as before it was just through the speakers. Also I think I felt a vibration while holding on to the 32x when it was turned on, I know the 32x works.

It's humming!? That's not good.

Please tell me you're using an actual original Genesis AC Adaptor and not a Genesis model 2 (MK-2103) AC adaptor. Because the two versions of the system don't have the same power requirements at all.

yes, it is the correct power supply, and it works fine with my other model 1. I was afraid the humming was a power issue and so I turned it off immediately.

Yeah, the harmonics imbalance (humming) is either being caused by a failed electronic component or being incuded through another component by a failed component. Really hard to say what it could be.

it looks like the corrosion bridged 2 pins of a component and fried it.
